The ignition coil is a critical part of a car’s internal combustion engine. It is responsible for transforming the battery’s low voltage into thousands of volts needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. Without a properly functioning ignition coil, the power of the engine will be significantly impaired. A primary circuit fault in the ignition coil can cause a range of problems, from poor performance to complete shutdowns.
A primary current fault in an ignition coil occurs when either the high-voltage primary wire, the spark plug wire, or the vehicle’s distributor cap has a short circuit or opens up. This results in a complete loss of power, as the current isn’t able to flow through the coil. If you suspect that your ignition coil is having a primary circuit fault, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot it.
First, check the spark plug wire and verify that it is firmly connected to the coil. If not, then reconnect the spark plug wire. Second, double-check if the high-voltage primary wire is securely screwed into the coil. If not, then screw it in tightly. And finally, inspect the distributor cap for any signs of wear or tear. If the cap is damaged, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Once you have checked all the components of the ignition coil, it is important to monitor the engine’s performance for any signs of improvement. If the primary circuit fault was caused by a loose wire or a worn-out distributor cap, then the engine’s performance should be back to normal. However, if the fault persists even after these corrective measures, then it is best to have the ignition coil inspected by a licensed mechanic.
