Ignition coils are a critical part of any vehicle’s ignition system, converting low-voltage electricity into high-voltage currents needed to power the spark plugs. The primary and secondary circuits of the coil are responsible for the voltage transformation, and therefore its proper location is essential for optimum performance.
The primary circuit of the ignition coil is where the low-voltage current from the battery is first introduced. It is composed of an iron core surrounded by two windings of copper wire. The winding connected to the battery is known as the primary winding, and its opposite end is connected to either the distributor or the electronic switch. This connection forms the primary circuit, and the current flow through it creates a magnetic field inside the coil.
The magnetic field then induces a voltage in the secondary winding, which is where the high-voltage pulse is generated. This winding is typically built with hundreds of turns of copper wire, and it is connected to the spark plug on one side, forming the secondary circuit. As the primary current moves through the primary winding, the secondary winding amplifies the voltage many thousand times and sends it to the spark plug.
Good positioning of the primary and secondary circuits is necessary to ensure the highest performance and reliability of the ignition coil. Both circuits should be properly connected and located, so that they do not produce too much heat or vibrate in their mountings. Any physical damage, such as cracking, could lead to poor performance and can cause the coil to fail. For these reasons, it is important to keep your vehicle regularly serviced to ensure that the ignition systems are always running smoothly.
