What Is Motor Driver Circuit

An electronic motor driver circuit is a power amplifier that controls the rotational speed and torque of an electric motor. By converting the low-level signals from a microcontroller board or other types of digital controllers into higher drive currents, it ensures the efficient operation of electric motors in a wide range of applications.

The basic function of a motor driver circuit is to take in low-level signals from the control system, typically no more than five volts, and amplify it to a higher voltage level as much as 100 times more than the input signal, allowing the motor to draw enough current for motion. From controlling precision robotic arms to operating industrial production lines, motor driver circuits are used in an ever-growing number of automation and control applications, due to their ability to provide reliable and consistent power amplification.

The design of a motor driver circuit is dictated by the type and performance of the motor, and the requirements of the driving application. The configuration of the driver usually includes transistors, thyristors, FETs, MOSFETS and other components that enable the controlled flow of current and voltage, so that the motor can operate in a specific manner. For motor drivers to safely and accurately perform their functions, they must be designed to handle the current and voltage ratings of the motor, and have proper protection circuitry to prevent any possible damage to the motor and the driver itself.
